Booking Deposit, Cancellations and Refunds:
(To confirm a booking, we require a NZ$250 deposit.)
1. Cancellation within seven days of booking:
Bookings cancelled within seven days of being made, and 14 days or more before the start of hire, will be refunded in full. After seven days, you may use the deposit against another hire.
2. Late Changes to Bookings:
Any changes to bookings made within 14 days of the hire commencing are at the discretion of the Branch Manager.
3. No Shows and Late Cancellations:
The deposit of $250 is non-refundable, however there will not be any additional charges.
4. Early Returns:
Refunds for early returns only apply after 50 days actual hire, where 7 days advance notice by fax or e-mail has been received by Rental Car Village. The refund is calculated by actual amount paid for the hire period, less actual hire period at rack rates, less one penalty day at rack rates, less any travel agent commissions, equals refund.
5. Other Refunds
We will refund money for all receipts for repairs required to keep the vehicle in a safe and roadworthy condition. Example: you may require some engine oil or a new interior light bulb. However you must phone us if the cost is over $100.
Insurance
Insurance (included): Standard excess is $1,000
If you cause any damage to the vehicle, you are required to pay a maximum of $1,000. This covers both single vehicle and multiple vehicle accidents. You do not have to pay if the accident was not your fault.
Zero Excess (optional): $15 per day or $280 per hire
If you have an accident, you will not have to pay anything. This also covers multiple tyre punctures.

How we calculate the amount of days:
Pickup and Drop Off:
We calculate all hires on a Calendar Day Basis. You may pickup the vehicle anytime after 8 a.m, however you are required to drop off the vehicle by 5 p.m. on the final day of hire. Vehicles returned after 5 pm automatically accept the Late Return Option (see below).
Late Return (optional): Cost is half of daily rate
Flights departing Christchurch Airport often leave early in the morning. To assist hirer’s who would like to spend the last night in their camper van we offer a late return option. Return the vehicle anytime until 7 am the following morning and only pay for half a day. You can book a shuttle bus to collect you outside our office 24 hours a day. This option is also available for Auckland hires.
Type of Hire:
One Island Only or All of New Zealand
We offer cheaper prices for traveling within the North or South Island only. Select All of New Zealand if you would like to travel both islands.
One Way Hires
Our rental cars and campervans may be rented from Auckland or Christchurch. A relocation fee of up to $400 applies to one way rentals.
Split Hire (multiple hire)
Hire a vehicle in the North Island and another vehicle in the South Island (or vice versa). Make your own way between Auckland and Christchurch at your own pace, or fly. You only pay for the days you are using the vehicle because we calculated the price as one hire. In addition, if you hire extras such as outdoor table and chairs, a linen pack or choose the zero excess for insurance, you pay only one time. You also save on the ferry crossing, any long term rental discounts and there is no one way fee. The minimum hire period for each island is seven days.
Security Bond
When you pickup the vehicle, we make an imprint of your credit card on the rental agreement. There is no money taken from the credit card at that time. Your credit card imprint may be used for expenses such as extending the rental, damage to the vehicle (if you did not have a zero excess, and only if it was your fault), or if the vehicle was returned unclean.
Traffic Infringements:
We have a $40 administration fee for traffic infringements, including as parking tickets, speed camera tickets, etc. Please note that all parking tickets are left under the windscreen wiper by the Parking Warden. The ticket will show a due date of when it’s required to be paid. If you pay the ticket directly, or if you ask us to pay the ticket on your behalf before the due date, then you will not have to pay the administration fee.
If the ticket is not paid by the due date, the local authorities send another copy of the ticket to us by post. Speed camera tickets usually take more than two weeks before they are received in the post. The administration fee covers the cost of us writing to the local authorities that issued the traffic infringement and transferring the ticket to your name. The local authorities will then send another copy of the ticket directly to you by post.
Where you can drive
You can drive our cars and campervans on all public sealed and unsealed roads except for three: Ninety Mile Beach, Ball Hutt Road and Skippers Canyon.
1. Ninety mile beach - Far North
Ninety mile beach is registered as a road as tour buses provide tours along the beach. You are permitted to drive along State Highway One to Cape Reinga and the light house. This is one of New Zealand’s northern most points. Bus trips for Ninety Mile Beach are available from the Bay of Islands and Kaitia.
2. Ball Hutt Road Road - Mount Cook
This very steep road traverses New Zealand’s highest mount, Mt Cook. You are allowed to drive as far as the visitors centre.
3. Skippers Canyon - Queenstown

Skippers Canyon was used during the gold rush days and is now home to tourist attracts including AJ Hackett’s Pipeline Bungy Jump, Winky’s Gold Mining Museum and adventure tours such as jet boating. Daily tour buses can take you down into the Canyon.
